SLC Policies and Procedures:
Student Organization
Computing Equipment
College of Engineering (CoE) affiliated student organizations that are registered with the SLC and in good standing with the Polygon Engineering Council, can obtain computer equipment and/or technical computer support assistance through Computer Aided Engineering (CAE).
CoE offers a three-tier approach to improve the computer equipment and desktop technical support for student organizations. Organizations may opt into one of the following tiers based on the operational needs of the group:
Tier 1
-
College of Engineering, through CAE, will provide a desktop computer, which will be on a replacement cycle that matches CAE labs (currently 3 years). The computer will be purchased with the standard CAE yearly purchase and will match CAE’s desktop hardware configuration. This computer must be placed in the college assigned office for that student group.
-
The desktop software will be configured identically to a standard CAE lab computer and can only be altered or modified by CAE.
-
Groups that choose Tier 1 will receive a larger CAE disk quota. This is to offset the fact that they will not be able to use their local hard disk for permanent storage.
-
CAE will guarantee that the computer is properly maintained and will not be subject to disconnection from the network for viral or security reasons.
-
CAE’s faculty support group will configure these computers. A Tier 1 computer will have an SLC/CAE administrator account and password in order to maintain the computer and install both automatic Windows and Anti-virus updates service, which cannot be removed or disabled.
-
Student groups should submit problems through the CAE HelpDesk and will get support similar to a CAE lab.
-
UW appropriate use guidelines still apply, which can be read in full at http://www.cio.wisc.edu/policies/appropriateuse.aspx.
Tier 2
-
Each year in CAE’s “computer replacement cycle”, CAE will identify 5-10 retiring computers to be placed into a replacement pool. (These computers are usually 3-4 years old). The computers in the replacement pool will be available for those organizations that choose Tier 2. This computer must be placed in the college assigned office for that student group.
-
CAE’s faculty support group will configure these computers. A Tier 2 computer will have: an SLC / CAE administrator account and password in order to maintain the computer and install both automatic Windows and Anti-virus updates service, which cannot be removed or disabled.
-
The Tier 2 option allows a student organization to have an account that has administrator privileges which allows for Software installation and other administrator functions.
-
CAE will guarantee that the computer is properly maintained and will not be subject to disconnection from the network for viral or security reasons.
-
Student groups should submit problems through the CAE Faculty Support group and will get preferred service.
-
UW appropriate use guidelines apply as referenced in Tier 1.
Tier 3
-
Any student organization that may already have a computer(s) via a grant, donation or other means, can continue to operate their computer under Tier 3.
-
A Tier 3 computer will have: an SLC / CAE administrator account and password in order to maintain the computer and install both automatic Windows and Anti-virus updates service, which cannot be removed or disabled.
-
Student groups should submit problems through the CAE Faculty Support group and will get best effort service.
-
UW acceptable use guidelines apply.
The UW requires maintenance of security and anti-virus updates. Read more about campus security at http://www.cio.wisc.edu/security/ to ensure that your student organization is following the campus policy and procedure for computer use and maintenance.
To select a tier for your student group, or to change your current one, please contact the Student Leadership Center at slc@engr.wisc.edu. This computer support program will be administered through the SLC, not CAE.
