Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Honor Society: Pi Tau Sigma is an international honor society of top Juniors and Seniors in Mechanical Engineering. There are over 160 chapters from universities across North America. It was co-founded by our chapter in 1915 with four basic goals: To foster high ideals in the engineering profession To stimulate and support departmental activities To promote professional welfare To develop leadership and citizenship Our chapter maintains active membership of about fifty and strives to achieve these goals through its activities, within the College of Engineering and in the community at large.

American Institute of Chemical Engineers

American Institute of Chemical Engineers: The UW-Madison student chapter of AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineering) is a student run organization that facilitates communication between Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) undergraduate students and both the CBE department and industry. AIChE recruits industrial representatives to speak at the meetings, organizes plant tours, offers tutoring services, aids local high schools with science Olympiad, and organizes social events.

Biomedical Engineering Society

Students who are interested in the application of science and engineering principles to medicine join BMES to focus on biomedical engineering and its utilization. BMES provides academic, personal, professional, and social opportunities. UW-Hospital has agreed to work with BMES on a Surgery Shadow program that allows a one-on-one visit with a surgeon. The national Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) has chosen UW-Madison's student BMES chapter for multiple awards for its Meritorious Achievement Award, the society's highest student honor.

International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience

International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience: IAESTE is a student organization at UW-Madison that facilitates international internships for students with technical studies. The LC (local committee) at Madison is just one of many LC's across the nation and the globe. As a local committee we network with local industry and research groups in Madison and Wisconsin to find internships. Our parent committee, IAESTE United States or the U.S. national committee, communicates between other IAESTE committees in other nations and sets up the exchanges between countries. IAESTE's primary focus is on building global skills for tomorrow's technical leaders through internship exchanges. In an age of industrial globalization, international work experience is priceless.

UW Steel Bridge Team

UW Steel Bridge Team: The Steel Bridge Competition is an annual event that challenges engineering students to design and fabricate the most structurally and functionally efficient bridge. Each year the rules are modified to keep the competition fresh and competitive. In 2005, a bridge member must fit in a box measuring 42"x6"x6". The overall length of their bridge must be able to span a 21'-0" protected wetland while being skewed 2'-6". During the competition, a construction team will be timed to assemble their bridge over the wet land. After the bridge is built, it will be weighed and load-tested with 2500 lbs. Deflections and the depth of the bridge section are measured. All these numbers will be entered into formulas to determine the overall winner.

Flying Badgers

Flying Badgers: The University of Wisconsin's Flying Badgers team is an undergraduate research group that works with NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program. We design and ground-test an experiment at the university and then travel to Houston to test the experiment aboard NASA's KC-135a, which includes micro-gravity testing.

Engineers without Borders

Engineers Without Borders: According to the EWB website, EWB projects involve the design and construction of water, waste-water, sanitation, energy, and shelter systems. The projects are conducted by groups of students under the supervision of faculty and professional engineers from partnering engineering firms. By involving students in every step of the EWB process, the program maximizes learning and awareness of the social, economic, environmental, political, ethical, and cultural impacts of engineering projects.
