Welcome to the Student Leadership Center (SLC) in the College of Engineering (COE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The SLC serves as a hub to connect engineering students to the various leadership and involvement opportunities within the COE.

What is Leadership?

Leadership skills are the critical communication and interpersonal navigation tools that industry demands from today’s engineer. In the SLC, we believe that every student has the potential to be a leader and that leadership is a process, rather than a position. Leadership is ethical, purposeful, and collaborative and ultimately results in positive social change. Leaders inspire and motivate others to work towards a common goal. The COE offers a wide variety of experiences for students to learn and practice leadership.

Why Get Involved?

The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), conducted by the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs, compiled responses from over 50,000 students from 52 campuses across the nation in 2006, to assess the development of leadership capacity in college students. Findings from the study show that involvement in campus organizations positively related to the level of development in students. The study also found that students who attended even one formal leadership program reported significantly higher leadership outcomes than those who had not attended a leadership program on campus. Getting involved in a student organization or attending a leadership program can provide students the opportunity to develop and practice valuable leadership skills such as problem solving; communication; conflict resolution; collaboration and teamwork; organization and more.

Leadership
is much more
an art,
a belief,
a condition of the heart, than a set of things to do.

The visible signs of artful leadership are expressed, ultimately, in practice.

—Max De Pree,
Leadership is an Art

Students participate in our programs and/or join student organizations for a variety of reasons, including the desire:

  • To meet new people and make new friends
  • To explore new interests
  • To learn new or enhance current skills
  • To network and gain experience related to their field of interest
  • To be exposed to leadership opportunities on campus
  • To build their resume, and
  • To give back to the community

This web site will link you to the different opportunities to explore leadership within the COE. Take a look around, stop by the office or email slc@engr.wisc.edu to learn how to get the most out of your experience at UW-Madison.
